Jose Julian Marti Perez, (1853-1895) . Cuban National Hero. One of the most outstanding leaders against Spanish colonialism and against the expansionism of the nascent North American imperialism, towards the Latin American countries.

Outstanding writer, poet, speaker and journalist. Revolutionary democrat, defender of the humble masses and fighter for equal rights and for the closest unity between black and white Cubans.

Founder of the Cuban Revolutionary Party that was proclaimed on April 10, 1892, a party from which he was elected, by unanimous vote, as a delegate and founded the newspaper Patria. The bases of this party were democratically discussed among the associations of delegates, and, among other elements, they stated that it was constituted to achieve the united effort of all men of good will, the independence of Cuba and promote and assist that of Puerto Rico.

It defined the nature of the struggle and should lead it to a true Cuban transformation in all economic, political and social aspects. As a delegate of the Martí Party, he took on the task of unifying the forces that would lead to the war in Cuba that began on February 24, 1895. On March 25 of the same year, in Santo Domingo, he and Máximo Gómez signed the Manifesto of Montecristi, which was the program of the war.

Shortly after, he left for Cuba to demonstrate that he was not only the man who harangued, but that he was capable of giving his life for the principles they enunciated.

He died on the battlefield on May 19, 1895. His work and his preaching inspired Cuban revolutionaries in later generations.
