Ronaldo Rodríguez (Baracoa (Cuba)|Guantánamo, February 10, 1992) is a musically eclectic and alternative young singer-songwriter, with roots in pure Cuban tradition.
Born in Baracoa on February 10, 1992, the Cuban singer-songwriter Ronaldo Rodríguez lives in Cuba with each performance. His influences are many; That's why his music has so many references. His lyrics are outstanding, with a particular way of telling the Island. Ronaldo's music is a constant chronicle, appealing to double meanings on some occasions, with the influence of Calle 13.
From an early age he ventured into composition and interpretation, accompanied by his guitar. An Industrial Engineering student at the Universidad de Oriente, he stood out in that house of higher studies within the festivals of amateur artists; Previously, he had already won the Grand Prize at the FAR Amateur Artists Festival. Before settling definitively in Havana, where he became a professional with this project, he was a vocalist for the Cuban Lions reggae group from Santiago, with whom he participated in Romerías de Mayo, the Caribbean Festival and the "Pepe Sánchez" Trova Festival. He performed in Spain in 2019 at the Intercultural Festival of Nations and in 2020 he performed, along with Silvio Rodríguez, in one of his concerts on the Tour of the Neighborhoods. Ronkalunga Rolando Hernández is the director of Ronkalunga's Band which performed at the awards gala of the Alternative Music Festival "Cuerda Viva 2020" that was recorded in the Arcos de Cristal hall of Cabaret Tropicana. Group, founded just three years ago, is dedicated to the fusion of different traditional and foreign rhythms. Its repertoire includes dissimilar genres and versions of Cuban songs of all time.
On February 10, 2017, the band played for the first time at the Jardín de la gorda, the rock founded by the troubadour Sara González at the Centro Iberoamericano de la Décima y el Verso Improvisado. The director Ana María Rabassa was there, she asked the leader of the group if they had some songs recorded and thus the link with the great family of Cuban alternative music was created. In 2019, Ronkalunga won a Cuerda Viva award in the alternative music category. This year they covered the Cuban classic Lágrimas negra, by Miguel Matamoros, and won their second prize in covers and versions. It has also been presented in the Lucas project and other national events. With the support of the Hermanos Saíz Association, he has given concerts at the Pabellón Cuba and other cultural institutions. With Ronkalunga he filmed a video clip of his song ¨El refranero¨, one of the cuts from the new CD under the direction of actor and director Carlos Alberto Méndez.
Among his hits is "Raros Pasos" - a musical compendium rooted in tradition, but endowed with an alternative sound that mixes, above all, the intellectual legacy of Nueva Trova with Caribbean and traditional rhythms. With all the songs he wrote, Ronaldo is accompanied in the arrangements by Marcos Alonso, Danel Estrada and José Raúl Machado. The recording, mixing and mastering were carried out by Dj Sony (Arnol Picarín) and the musical cast is made up of: José Raúl Machado on bass; Danel Estrada, Iván Mastrapa and Marcos Alonso on guitars; Alejandro Chavez on drums; Dany Alejandro Méndez on minor percussion; and the choirs of Gretel Tamames and Braulio Fernández. The packaging is completed by the design of Ana Lyen Lara from Zenit Tatoo.
